He is the true living God and saviour of mankind. but really tho, he's basically the strongest psyker to ever exists in the universe after the days of the old ones. he sees himself as the peak of all Human evolution, and strived to conquer the entire galaxy and rid of all threats. so that in time. people born could have the same power as he does. this dream however died when his tratiorus son, Horus wounded him in combat and forced him to sit on an eternal life support. He is now a rotting corpse, aiding humanity by halting the very demons of chaos from destroying earth, and also guiding them through the stars. 

a good 60% of all Warhammer animations out there are fan made. but the Warhammer community are very stingy about lore accuracy. so expect most of what you see to be lore accurate. I can't say anything whether it's canon or not since, well hundreds of thousands of battles are fought everyday throughout the galaxy
