Gohans character is fine. People are just butt hurt his character was never a fighter and never wanted to believe it. 

Seriously people just gotta get over the fact that Gohan didn't become the main character.

Could they have handled his character better, probably but should he have be come a carbon copy of his farther heck naGohan never liked fighting EVER, he was basically forced into it, first by piccolo, then by his farther and finally out of necessity because his idiot of a dad blew himself up in the previous arc (which didn't even matter in the end because apparently death has no meaning of the DBZuniverse)

So when all POSSIBLE threats had reasonable gone away (I mean we're do you go after galaxy destruction level threats) he decided to focus on his study's.

AND EVEN THEN HE WAS FORCED BACK INTO FIGHTING WHEN THE DESTROYER GODS DECIDED TO HAVE A PISSING CONTEST

It's taking the Chadhan joke to new levels.
