Youkai also referred to as Ayakashi or mamono are basically supernatural spirits and/or monsters which range from being malevolent and bringing misfortune and harm to being benevolent and bringing luck
in general their appearance is mostly animalistic a good example would be spirits named Tengu with wings, red skin and quite the unhuman features appearing as some sort of warrior monks 
Japanese folklore is most interesting and very weird considering some creatures but most of the time it is simply interesting
